How can we slow down the aging process? Why do some people seem to age poorly, developing chronic disease and facing cognitive decline while others appear to avoid this till very late in life? All around the world, there are growing populations of older adults. Cognitive decline naturally occurs during aging, but there are also neurodegenerative diseases that occur later in life. Higher populations of older adults will mean a simultaneous rise in the populations suffering from these diseases. While there are a variety of studies examining neurodegenerative diseases, clear markers that indicate early stages of illness do not yet exist.
This study will examine factors related to cognitive decline in aging by looking at neuropsychological assessments, fitness, genetic markers, and other biomarkers. Our goal is to identify modifiable factors related to cognitive decline so we can give people tools to preserve their brain function and give clinicians more factors to examine when assessing cognitive health.
